Introduction To Codecs And VoIP
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is the science behind transmitting audio over the Internet in the form of data Packets. During VoIP'S inception, people were concerned about the quality of Audio being transmitted over the Internet. Since its development, VoIP and audio Codecs have improved greatly. To get the most out of your VoIP connection you will need to take the time and effort to keep your computer up to date. If your computer is running on a slow processor or a very old operating system, your computer may not be equipped to handle VoIP or produce the highest audio quality.
By first comparing your system to your VoIP'S service provider requirements, you can save time and make sure that your computer is equipped and ready for Voice over Internet Protocol.
If you are having trouble with your VoIP'S audio quality, then you may need to check your soundboard. If your computer has an out of date soundboard, it will affect the overall quality of your audio.
Regularly make sure that all of your audio and video Codecs are up to date with your Windows Update program. Check and make sure that you have DivX installed and upgraded as well. This will help offset any complications you may be having with poor audio.
As long as you have updated your Audio Codecs, and checked for newer drivers, you should be all set for Voice over Internet Protocol. For VoIP to produce great quality audio, you will need to make sure that you have a High Speed Internet connection. This can be either DSL or Cable Modem, but VoIP may have problems with Dial Up- again check with your VoIP service provider. There are some providers who do have VoIP service that is compatible with Dial Up Internet connections.
Many people prefer VoIP over standard telephone systems due to the fact that they can experience great audio quality- many people will never know that you are calling from your VoIP service. And VoIP has other benefits beside great voice quality.
VoIP offers telephony features that are typically offered with PSTN networks for a fee. Yet, if you check with your service provider, many of these same features are included absolutely free with VoIP. These services and features include Voicemail, *69, Call Forwarding, Caller Id, and Call Transfer.
Not only residential users are becoming fast fans of VoIP but business owners are making the switch as well. In the early days, businesses were concerned about switching to VoIP, for they needed to have high quality audio to run their businesses.
Now, many businesses have come to learn that VoIP does offer great audio as well as applications that are specifically designed to handle all of their business needs. These programs and the ability to interact with customers in real time have made the switch to VoIP one of the best decisions a small business could make.
Some more benefits for using VoIP with businesses include flexibility and customer service. Call centers have learned that the high audio quality and ability to integrate web features, Email, and audio have made VoIP the perfect solution for their needs.
Many call centers are opting to outsource their work to other countries, and by utilizing VoIP, call centers can exist virtually worldwide.
Another benefit for small businesses incorporating VoIP service includes greater productivity for mobile employees. VoIP a great way for mobile employees to stay connected to their main offices. They can also take advantage of the great long distance and local calling plans. Since VoIP can be used anywhere there is a High Speed Internet connection, the employee who travels frequently, the sales man, and those who work from mobile offices can maintain a high level of interaction with their employers, fellow employees, and clients or customers.
VoIP has proved that it offers great audio quality and is a perfect choice for meeting both residential and business telephony needs. As technology continues to advance, we can know that as we conduct our transactions over VoIP, that the listener on the receiving end is hearing us with crystal clear audio clarity and that the future of VoIP will only have greater products readily available for its users.

Riddles That Make You Smile
Most riddles are a form of lateral-thinking puzzle. To get them, you have to move laterally in your mind, away from the expected line of thought. This is especially true of funny riddles. What did the others do when the cannibal was late for dinner? They gave him the cold shoulder, of course.
Then there are the riddles that aren't really jokes, but they make you smile when you hear the answer. If a plane crashes on the border of the U.S. and Canada, in which country do they bury the survivors? They don't bury survivors, of course. Laughter is good for the brain. Okay, I am waiting for the research on that, but it will be proven someday.
Oh, and no political jokes here. By the way, do you know what's wrong with political jokes? They get elected! Okay, maybe just that one. Here are a few more riddles that will make you smile.
1. What did the instructor at the school for Kamikaze pilots tell his students?
2. Is it legal for a man to marry his widow's sister in the state of California?
3. How many times can you subtract 5 from 25?
4. What two things can never be eaten for breakfast?
5. What did the fish say when he ran into a concrete wall?
6. Imagine you are in a sinking boat and surrounded by sharks. How do you survive?
7. Before Mount Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain on Earth?
Answers To The Riddles
1. Watch this closely. I'm only going to do this once.
2. Probably not, since he's dead.
3. Just once, because after you subtract anything from it, it's not 25 anymore.
4. Lunch and Dinner.
5. "Damn."
6. Just quit imagining!
7. Mount Everest, of course.

Security on Campus

It may surprise you to know that college and university campuses are scenes to more than just socializing and learning. All too often, they can also be the scenes of a crime. Awareness of this problem has grown dramatically over the last twenty years, and many institutions are taking appropriate measures to protect their students from malice. Wise parents do not close their eyes to these issues, but discuss them openly with their students. When choosing schools for their sons or daughters, they consider the security programs and features utilized by the schools. You must do all you can to ensure that your student doesn't get an education they didn't plan for.
Drugs and Alcohol
Nine out of ten student felonies involve alcohol or drugs. Annually, 1,700 college students die from alcohol-related causes. On their own for the first time, students often feel a surge of independence that can lead to poor decision-making, such as binge drinking. There are many resources available to help parents discuss substance use with their young adult children. Meanwhile, when choosing a school favor institutions with strict policies regarding alcohol and drug abuse, and effective parent-notification. In this way, colleges and universities keep better control of this problem.
Sexual Offenses
Unfortunately, 25% of undergraduate women nationally will be victims of an attempted or completed sexual assault. Many schools have embraced innovative technological solutions in an effort to protect their students. Residence halls that use electronic key-card systems are superior to the ones still using old-fashioned metal locks, and most commons areas of dormitories are now outfitted with video surveillance. At the very least, residence halls should be monitored, and nighttime access should be limited to residents only. Room doors should be equipped with peep holes and dead bolts. Bathrooms are safer when restricted to floor residents. For peace of mind, you may see if single-sex and "substance-free" dormitories are available. Crime is lower in these halls.
Another important deterrent against sexual predators is awareness. Your student should study the campus and neighborhood with respect to routes between his or her residence and classes/activities schedule. Parking lots should be adequately secured, lit and patrolled. Many campuses offer emergency phones, escort services, and shuttle systems so that students should never have to compromise their safety by walking across campus alone after dark. These are free services that have dramatically decreased crime.
Theft
College students are often the target of fraudulent identity-theft and credit card schemes. Make sure your student is savvy about personal information. They should never leave bill payments, credit card offers, health insurance statements, or any personal mail lying around. Instruct them never to give personal information over the phone to any company unless they initiated the call, and they know the company is reputable. Caution students not to give out their social security numbers to obtain credit cards or memberships, and to keep a personal record of all such cards, with expiration dates and company phone numbers in a locked drawer or cabinet. PIN numbers should not be kept in wallets, and should never incorporate birthdates, social security numbers, telephone numbers or addresses.
The Jeanne Clery Act is a federal law that was signed into effect in 1990, requiring colleges and universities to disclose annual information about campus crime and security policies. It is your privilege and right to know these statistics. This law was passed at a great cost. In 1987 Jeanne Clery was raped and murdered in her dorm room by a student with whom she was unacquainted, who had passed through three propped open doors in order to rob dormitory rooms. Knowing they could never bring their daughter back, Mr. and Mrs. Clery demanded safer campuses for future students. More advice regarding security on campus can be found on their outreach site at www.campussafety.org.
